How it all All Started

I decided to start a blog. I am not entirely sure what exactly I am going to write about, but it will for sure be related to BecksFabrics and sewing/quilting and of course fabric.

At first let me tell you how it all started and how I decided to open a fabric store. When I was a little girl I spent a lot of time with my great grandmother and she was an avid quilter and she used to sew a lot! Everything from clothes and bedding to clothes for my dolls, to bags, curtains, whatever you needed or wanted she was there to make it. She even taught a sewing class at one time. Needless to say I spent a lot of time around fabric and sewing machine. We would sit and flip through the patterns and when we decided on what we would make, Grandma would pull out just the perfect fabric from her stash. She taught me a few things, but mainly I learned to love everything handmade and fabric. I used to open the door of her closet and just stare at her stash, admiring it for hours, dreaming of things that we could make with it.

When I was a teenager I wanted to make a summer outfit for myself which I found flipping through the patterns and of course Grandma had just the perfect fabric for it. This was officially the first thing I made by myself without any help. Then I got older, school, career and life took over and I never really spent much time doing what I loved doing the most.

Years later I started working in the operating room as a nurse and noticed that some nurses had pretty hats that were not disposable. I wanted one for myself but never knew where to get one and when I asked those nurses it was always someone made it for them. Finally, one day I was given one by somebody at work. I loved it and later decided to make one for myself. This was when I first went looking for fabric and realized that the options were very limited and fabric was very expensive! I made a few hats for myself and other nurses liked them so then I made a couple more for my friends.

I came across a fabric sale and I bought a ton of fabric and decided to open my first etsy store and sell hats for the operating room since they were quite popular among OR nurses. (you can check it out if you like www.etsy.com/ca/shop/beckslittletreasures) When I was pregnant I decided to make my first quilt; it took me a very long time but I was happy with the end result. I discovered quilting!

My daughter came very unexpectedly two months early; she lived in the hospital for over two months and I needed to distract myself from all the stress and negativity. I started making blankets for her, car seat canopies and baby clothes. Somehow I made too many canopies and after donating some to the hospital I added them to my etsy store where I had the OR hats for sale.

Time went on and I could not believe how expensive fabric was and how limited were my choices. A crazy idea was born - what if I open my own fabric store? Canadian fabric store so there will be no customs duties, and also make it home like. Allow people to pick up their fabric for free if they wanted to, use the cheapest available shipping. BecksFabrics was born. I can tell you it was not an overnight decision and I thought about it for a very long time. I would not have been able to do it without the support of my husband and you, my customers of course. I will tell you later how I selected my suppliers and talk more about how it all came together if you want. For now I feel like I should finish my first post :)

Enjoy browsing through the fabric collections!
